Attention Tourists In The Dominican Republic:

STOP going to my island tryin' to get your groove back! You're killing my peeps with your American germs!!

From the DR newswire:

Tests reveal 70 new HIV cases
Over nine thousand people were tested for HIV over the Easter holiday. Teams of doctors, lab technicians and specialists attached to 25 Presidential AIDS Council (Copresida) mobile units carried out the tests. According to Listin Diario, most of the positive results were found in Barahona and Puerto Plata, and Peravia had the least number.

Testing in the "bateyes", worker housing attached to sugar mills, showed a 3% to 3.5% incidence among people tested. Overall, the results matched the findings of the Demographic and Health Survey taken in 2007 (ENDESA 2007), which showed a 0.8% incidence in the general population.

Copresida director Humberto Salazar told Listin Diario reporters that the tests were conducted in tourist areas, mainly Boca Chica and Puerto Plata, and added that the final report would be released today.

we have all the tools to make the right decisions in life, but do we ever? *sigh*

I shiver whenever I read reports concerning HIV. It's killing my people here, as well. Thank God I been slowed down. Can't get it through mental stimulation. You feel me?

To this day I still cannot watch "And the Band Played On" without getting all worked up and/or crying like a baby.

And when I tried to read the book? Forget it... I couldn't get through it...

I've been to DR twice, each time for about a week. The prostitution situation is out of control there in the tourist areas.
You get "walkers" coming onto each resort and the beaches, offering their services for as little as US $2.
They have condoms in the resort shops, which are only open in the daytime. The sex-workers only come around at night.

See what I'm sayin?? How hard is it to grab a handful of free condoms after the continental breakfast??

so... how many "walkers" did you meet? ;)

I saw 3 or 4 each night, but I "met" zero!
Luckily I hooked up with a German tourist chick so I didn't have to browse.
The first time I was only 16 and a virgin, so I might have been tempted. But, when you actually SEE these sex-workers, your shit just goes limp (mentally and physically). I guess $2 buys you the same thing there as it does here.

@i can't complain- it saddens me to think of these stats... I should really stop reading the news altogether

Yea DR is full of German tourists and immigrants. They buy up all the choice land and push the Dominicans out to the slums.

Don't worry, I'm aware of the situation. The Germans have been on my list for a while...
